DO PETS REALLY NEED AN EXAM BEFORE VACCINES? Regular wellness exams are always recommended by veterinarians. It is best to detect health issues in the beginning stages before they become an urgency or emergency, especially since those issues are easier to treat more successfully in the early stages. Our pet pals are experts at putting up a good front and most often even totally hiding an issue from us in their effort to please. Gosh they look fine to the naked eye, nothing looks amiss and yet they could be suffering or something could be brewing. It’s always best to catch a condition early. Vaccines should only be administered to a healthy pet in order to avoid any adverse reactions. In a pre-vaccination exam, your veterinarian will check weight, temperature, respiration, they will listen for a heart murmur or irregular lung sounds and other symptoms that are not always apparent by a casual observation. At a minimum a pre-vaccination exam is a must. “Across the country, State Veterinary Boards and other governing bodies have established guidelines that veterinary clinics should follow.” And veterinarians have the heart and are trained to provide the best care possible for the health of the pet patient and “to do no harm”. In that spirit, your veterinarian would never want to give a vaccine and/or any treatment to a pet patient without first determining that they were healthy enough to receive the requested service.
